The “Champ” takes on the “Defending Champ” with a full house loaded in this year’s Pacific Classic. The final time when Turf meets the Surf on Poly.
The Skinny:
Shared Belief – The Champ, undefeated, untested and unchallenged in 5 careers starts. Gets the Acid Test this race. Faces older horses, tries 10 furlongs and gets to chase a proven G1 opponent in Game on Dude. Shared Belief has not missed a work in 3 months, skipped away late in the Los Al Derby from a solid horse in Candy Boy. Probably will stalk in this spot.
Game on Dude has worked forwardly for this race. But Old Man River is catching up with this guy. In previous year’s Delmar has been The Dude’s Kryptonite in terms of top performances. Last year he broke through but the 1:13 fraction won’t cut it this year. Has lost 5 of 6 races and showed no fight in the last race. Needs to bring A game as his once large edge over these horses has disappeared in last year. Is he capable of another big effort at 10 furlongs. Recent form says no.
Majestic Harbor – got the dream trip and made his move at the exact time other horses were tiring in the last race. This pace scenario looks a lot tougher and bulkier field ensures that the trip won’t be the same. Think he is an underlay and if you missed the wedding last race – don’t go to the funeral.
Frac Daddy was not ridden aggressively in the San Diego and paid the price – he needs to be on the engine and getting involved down and dirty early to be at his best. Likes to be on the lead and going longer distance. If he gets a flyer and sets a moderate tempo could help dictate the pace or chase Game on Dude for awhile. Not sure if he is a 10 furlong horse and not fast enough to set the pace and not enough kick to hold off more experienced closers going longer.
Mystery Train – Speedy Argentinian adds some gas to the fire. This guy has some fast times and the trainer does well with imports off layoffs. 10 furlongs a challenge but not will make his presence felt.
The Betting:
The tote board will be tilted on Game on Dude and Shared Belief taking a lot of money. If you think either of those loses you can make some dough on this race. Thats a big IF. Been a fan of Shared Belief since race 1 – 3/1 is fair odds, but he is facing many hurdles in this race. Deserves all the props if he remains undefeated. The Choice.
