The Super Derby card is the focus this week and Prime Engine invades from the Northwest to take on horses from across the midwest and southwest including The Pickett Fence the morning line favorite.
Super Derby 2015 Field
Prime Engine invades from Emerald Downs and comes off a blowout 6 length win in the Emerald Derby in his last race. Won 2 races last fall before fading after showing speed in the Delta Jackpot. Capable of being on the lead and can also sit and press. Sharp recent workouts should have him ready to match that last race in Seattle. Steps up in class but has the benefit of sharp recent form. The “Pride of the Pacific Northwest” looms large.
Four Leaf Chief is a deep closer who needs a strong pace to run his best. Has lost 4 races in a row and finished off the board twice in those races. This is one of 5 horses who ran in the Prelude but should like the longer distance and needs more pace early to be a factor.
The Pickett Factor won the prep race in the Prelude and now has won 3 in a row and 4 of 5 overall. Fits on form and speed, needs to move up in class, but seems like a good time to try a field like this. Strong form and local jock makes him the morning line favorite.
Fusiachi Flame ran 4th in the Prelude and ran 2nd at Prairie Meadows this summer. Iowa Derby was a throw-out losing by 28 lengths in a race he did not fire. Overall form is slow and doesn’t have the raw speed to hang with the top horses. Needs to improve to finish in the top 3.
Allied Air Raid ran 2nd in the Prelude and 5 horses come out of that race to run in the Super Derby. Ran well in Iowa and looks to have some upside. Figures to improve and this gelding may be able to turn the tables and get his picture taken. Kentucky bred still has some room for improvement and running style fits well for the race flow of this race.
Chocopologie is another Louisiana Bred who seems to have maxed out speed figure wise. Won his last race by 7 lengths, but that was against state breds and he was 3/5 that day as he towered over the competition in that non-winner of 2 race. Steps up to face open stakes company. Seems like a longshot in this race.
Mobile Bay closed ground late for 3rd in the Prelude. Louisiana Bred is a closer and should get some pace to run at in this race. Could close late and minor chance to win if everything breaks his way.
The Super Derby Selection 2015:
Prime Engine has a sharp recent race, the most tactical speed and strong workouts. Should fire a strong race in his debut at Louisiana Downs. Prime Engine figures to sit off the speed and get first run on The Pickett Fence. Allied Air Raid is 2nd choice with a chance to improve off his last effort.
